We fired it up and have oil dumping out of the back of the intake.  Something told me we didn't use enough Black rtv, so guess what we are doing today.   Needless to day, we did get to drive the car, up the ramps,   It walked up the ramps without even giving it the gas.  Wow.  I cant wait to drive this thing

Bummer!

In reality you can’t have too much RTV, but you sure can have too little.

And I like to issue cut off bolts as studs to guide the intake down so it doesn’t slide.

A couple of things, one, I got a new trailer! Woohoo!

Monday I had an Eaton Detroit Truetrac installed in the rear of my GMC. And after playing with it to see how it works and driving over the passes today, I highly recommend it.

Seamless operation, works quick and I think, predictable. Parts of the road looked slick today but I didn’t slide any. I’ll know more about it on packed snow and ice if we get anymore this winter.

Yes, very nice!

I like my Truetrac, and you are right - it just works.  Nothing to know about it but that.

So, what's the plan for the trailer?

One plan is to help my son move to Georgia for Physicians Assistant school and maybe back to where he goes from there.

Other plans are, I’m sure I’ll find plenty to do with it.

Sounds like a plan.  But what will you tow the trailer with?

Re: The FORD Lounge

Well today, or tomorrow depending on the rain, hopefully will be able to drive the ranchero, that is if the intake does not leak.  I'm confident it wont.  Anyway, ya'll, this is my first rodeo with a 4v carburetor, Holley 4160.  I may need help tweaking this thing.  The carb is in running condition, at least i think it is.  Last weekend when i put it on the new intake, i disconnected the coil wire and cranked the engine until the bowls filled up, connected the wire and it fired right up, but other then driving it up the ramps to find out where all the oil was gushing out, was the only running the car/truck did.  It fired right up, but when it was idling, it would go up and down, up and down, i'm assuming right now that is because of the huge vacuum leak caused by the oil gushing out the back of the intake.  Anyway, wish us luck.

Good luck!

I think vacuum is metered by the PCV valve.
The leak in your valley is no different than the open breather in the opposite valve cover.

Re: The FORD Lounge

probably so, but while we are on the subject of the pcv valve, I have a really really stupid question.  The pcv valve is on the oil filler cap, which i know you connect this to vacuum.  the one on the other valve cover, where does that one go?

Do you have a picture?

There should only be one PCV valve, and it usually attaches to a port on the bottom of the carb or a port on the carb spacer.

Often the breather on the oil fill cap attaches to a filter in the side of the air filter housing.

(This is the off-topic thread. Truck discussion would be better served in the WHYDTYTT.)  ðŸ˜‰

Re: The FORD Lounge

The pcv valve sits in the oil filler cap, on the other valve cover in the back there is another hose connection, does that one go to the filter or vacuum?

That doesn't seem right to me.
There is never 'two vacuums'. PCV draws oil mist and smoke out. The other valve cover admits filtered air.

At least it's not right for trucks of this era. (not sure about a '70's Ranchero)

The carb should have a large port for PCV in the bottom flange.
That would usually go to the PCV valve which fits in a grommet in the passenger (right) side valve cover.

The oil fill cap would have a hose that reaches a coarse filter clipped into the side of the air cleaner housing.

Re: The FORD Lounge

It dosen't seam right to me either which is why it has always confused me.  This i can tell you.  We got the engine brand new in 1996, its a 351L7 police interceptor.  I'm assuming its an 80 something engine.  The town had one of those crown vics with that engine in it so i'm going by that.  When we got it, there was no intake on it, i dont remember if the valve covers came with it or if we took it off the 302 in nicks Torino.    My thinking is maybe some kind of emmissions device connected to one of them, not sure, but i believe the pcv should be in the back and the oil filer cap, a regular cap.  This is what makes sense to me

I've never heard of an L7 PI engine, but that doesn't mean much.
There were definitely 429 police motors (D0OR heads)

And I  know all the P71 CV's had the 4.6 mod motor. (that started in '92)

But none of this is about a '77 Ranchero.
I'd probably set it up like any other 351 HO.
